A Heart-felt Holiday

Roses are red, violets are blue, what’s the one national holiday, that celebrates you? Break out the candy, the cards, and all the love you have to give- it’s Valentine’s Day! Some say V-Day is all about spending money, and that its meaning doesn’t reach beyond the cost of an expensive bouquet of flowers or a diamond ring. Others despise it, claiming that this holiday excludes singles, and forces them to wallow in self-pity while happy couples celebrate. These sour misconceptions reflect wrongly on a day that is sweetly intended to be a celebration of something that is part of everyone’s lives: love.

Valentine’s Day is a unique holiday because it focuses on the relationships that we have formed with those around us. Unlike Christmas or Martin Luther King Jr. Day which we spend commemorating others, Valentine’s Day is a personal holiday with the sole purpose of showing appreciation for our very own loved ones.

“I think Valentine’s Day is such a cute holiday, and it gives people a chance to celebrate the love in their lives for no reason,” said Senior Amina Kaabi. Single or taken, it’s a day reserved for spreading the love, and of course receiving it from the people that love you too. V-Day is a feel-good holiday that helps us to kiss our worries goodbye for 24 hours while we nibble on candy and laugh at the silly cards our friends hand us. How can we complain about something that’s so sugary-sweet?

“I’m not going to lie, Valentine’s Day is an excuse to go out to dinner and have fun. Plus, I love getting chocolate!” said junior Jenna Balicki.

Every day consists of the same routines. We get up. Eat breakfast. Go to school. Valentine’s Day switches up our predictable lifestyles by adding an element of excitement into the mix. Girls pick over their clothes to find that perfect pink outfit, and boys contemplate who they will bring flowers to. The chorus performs “Singing Valentines” for loved students, and a spirit of happiness fills the usually dull halls.

Senior Rami Jabari said, “Valentine’s Day is just an all-around fun day. It’s not about having a valentine, or going on a date. It’s about setting aside a day to be happy and have a good time.”

Forget about the pressure of buying pricey gifts and finding a date. Valentine’s Day isn’t about the glitz and the glam, but rather about enjoying the people you love. So let the spirit of St. Valentine guide you joyfully through a Valentine’s Day full of goodies and treats, because no other holiday can compete.
