The Oscars through time

Written by Brenna O'neill

Hollywood. Winning that tiny gold man will not only catapult a relatively unknown actor to the A-list, but will solidify their name as one of the best in history. Movies like Braveheart (1996), Chicago (2003) and Million Dollar Baby (2005), have transformed their stars into highly respected members of the acting community.

As the first media-related award show, the Academy Awards, more commonly referred to as the Oscars, is one of the world’s most acclaimed acknowledgements of talent in the film industry.

“The Oscars are always interesting to watch,” said junior Meriem Khadroui, “I watch them every year, but never see all of the movies. I think that it is cool that they are so well respected and appeal to such a big group of people.”

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), votes for the year’s best in categories such as Best Actor, Best Actress, Best Director and Best Picture. AMPAS was started in 1927 by industry experts of the time who felt that recognition for the talent in film was long overdue.

The first Academy Awards ceremony took place on May 16, 1929 at the Roosevelt Hotel in Hollywood with 270 people in attendance. The event was brief, with only twelve categories to be announced, but gave the film community a chance to distinguish the most groundbreaking members. It became a worldwide celebration the following year when it was broadcasted on radio for millions to listen to.

Since the Academy Awards were first televised in 1953, it has grown to be one of the entertainment world’s most significant days of the year. People from every branch of the film industry come out to take part in the event.

With the recognition of the talent in new categories such as Visual Effects and Costume Design, the 12 categories, overtime, have doubled.

Sunday, March 7 will mark the 82nd annual Academy Awards ceremony and will be hosted by a team composed of 30 Rock’s Alec Baldwin and funny man, Steve Martin. This will be Martin’s third time hosting the event, the first two being the 73rd and 75th shows.

There are many different sources of excitement behind The Oscars. Whether it be the actual award distributions, the design of the stage, or the fashions shown on the red carpet, there is something for everyone. This year the three-hour long event will be shown on ABC. But luckily, other networks are expected to join in on the action and provide coverage on every detail of the event, even before the actual ceremony begins.

E! Network, for example, hosts “Live from the Red Carpet.” A favorite of many viewers, the program includes people from all over the industry interviewed about their Oscar attire, as well as rumors of new movies and their personal lives.

Freshman Stephanie Allshouse is just one of the many that will tune in for the pre-show action. “The Red Carpet is one of my favorite things to watch because I love looking at what designer everyone is wearing and what their hair looks like. For me it’s better than the actual awards.”
