Palestine and the Waiting Game

The world held it’s breath in surprise as Mahmoud Abbas took center stage Friday, September 23rd in the UN headquarter, representing the hope of two thousand Palestinians. He was placing an official bid for his people’s quest for independence by seeking official recognition by the United Nations of Palestine, symbolizing the new flame of hope for the forgotten people of Palestine.

“This is the time now for the Palestinian Spring. . . The time has come to end the suffering and the plight of millions of Palestinian refugees.” Abbas said, “…to end their displacement.”

Although a two state-agreement is definitely something that should be achieved, it’s not realistic, especially when it has been tried for so long. In all honesty, Palestine becoming a state isn’t necessarily thought to be ideal, particulary when the almighty United States isn’t backing them up, the move is instead a symbol for Palestinians, a cry for recognition and acknowledgment as they slowly seem to “disappear.”

The numbers forgotten, and in most cases not even known, are deplorable compared to Israel, a state already stable economically and politically, the modern day David and Goliath.

-From September 29, 2000, 124 Israeli children have been killed by Palestinians and 1,463 Palestinian children have been killed by Israelis.

-In total, horrifying on both ends, the death toll is 1,084 for Israelis and 6,340 Palestinians.

-For the year 2011, the U.S. is providing Israel with at least $8.2 million per day in military aid and $0 in military aid to the Palestinians.

-1 Israeli is being held prisoner by Palestinians while 5,554 Palestinians are currently imprisoned by Israel.

-0 Israeli homes have been demolished by Palestinians and 24,813 Palestinian homes have been demolished by Israel since 1967.

-The Israeli unemployment rate is 6.4%, while the Palestinian unemployment in the West Bank is 16.5% and40% in Gaza.

-Israel currently has 236 Jewish-only settlements and ‘outposts’ built on confiscated Palestinian land. Palestinians do not have any settlements on Israeli land.

It sad to see that these things are happening. That two “states” can’t come together, especially when a religious land that originates from the world’s most prominent religions ironically preaches peace, love and most importantly unity.
