Chess is an age-old game that has been played by many people over the years. Players of all ages enjoy the game and the competition. The Annandale High School Chess Club met for the second time of the year on Monday. The players eagerly entered the room after school in anticipation of a fun-filled afternoon of chess. The boards were set-up, the chips were put out, and the games began.
Of the seven players who attended, four were returning from last year and there were three new players this year.
Junior Ryan Bates has been a member for three years and has been playing for almost seven years. He came to chess club looking for, “the opportunity to play chess competitively with my friends.” He also comes to see if he’s the best amongst his friends. “I don’t like losing to my friends, so I try hard to win.”
Junior Nathan Clayton, a new member, came with similar aspirations, though not as competitively, as he has been playing for only seven days.
“I joined to play chess”, said Clayton. “And to win the district title,” he added jokingly.
Bates has a more realistic goal for the club. “We want to get into a tournament as a team this year,” he said. Though this is only the second meeting this year, the members of the club are enthusiastic about the upcoming year. The entire room was full of smiling people and good-natured fun. “We have fun when we are here and it is great mental stimulation when we play the game,” said Clayton.
Ms. Zagurski is the sponsor of the Chess Club and though she does not play herself, enjoys the presence of the students. The Chess Club meets every week in Ms. Zagurski’s room, room 108, and anyone and everyone is welcome to join in on the fun.
