Junior Mark Spicer, qualified for the Northern Region golf tournament on September 24. He was one of six players to compete in the two-day district tournament held at Twin Lakes Golf Course. The Atoms have not sent any players to the regional tournament for the past several years. With only three wins in the last three years, the team took a big step this year winning three of eight matches. Players are excused for the two days of school so they can compete for the district title and a chance to play in the regional tournament.
Spicer, known for his good approach shots and clutch putting, birdied the last hole of the tournament, after hitting within six feet from 180 yards out.
With no seniors on the team this year, players are hoping to advance more players to regionals next year and compete for the district title. “(the team) has really good chances on improving, with all returning players,” said Coach David O’Hara
The team this year, led consistently by juniors Mark Spicer, Jeremy Gillcash, and sophomore Greg Nielsen, is a lot smaller than it was last season. O’Hara, new to the golf team and AHS, decided to reduce the team from a 24 player roster, to only 12. This decision has proven to help, as he has been able to focus more time on fewer players.
