Students reflect on Earth Day

Earth Day is globally recognized as a day to celebrate the earth that we live in. People all over the earth participate in activities that helps to preserve the earth. At AHS, the Green Atoms Club participated in earth day activities such as gardening and going on outings.

The Green Atoms sponsor, Joyann Binsley, hopes to start an edible garden for this season. To keep the soil preserves, the plants will be produced organically.

“The garden will include vegetables such as  spinach, garlic, and brussel sprouts,” said Joyann Binsley.

Green Atoms go around the school to recycle cans, bottles, aluminum, and plastic every week. There is group called World Awareness and Transition that recycles paper and paper materials.

“For future events we hope to go to a park and collect trash, create more gardens,” said Sponsor Joyann Binsley. “We also thought about pulling out invasive species of vines out of trees.”

Another earth day activity would be to plant a butterfly garden that will attract small wildlife. Also, in case of an erosion a rain garden will help water flow away from the school.

To be more involved in Earth Day, students could go on an outing to a park or participate in an environmental activity to learn about our local community and learn how to improve it. Students can also go outside to garden or do some weeding.

Senior Zoe Tran “Myself, personally, I’m reducing my carbon footprint by recycling all of my papers that I don’t need and I did a bit of gardening.”

Students are holding a pledge to be more green and are taking small steps to maintain a healthy earth.
