March Madness returns

March Madness returns

As the 2013-2014 college basketball regular season comes to a close, the NCAA’s top college basketball teams prepare for conference tournaments and the March Madness tournament. The March Madness tournament, also known as the Final Four tournament, is a tournament made up of 68 teams that are split up into four divisions and ranked. A schedule in the form of a bracket is made, which shows who a team will play next if they win. A big March Madness tradition is people printing out brackets, filling them out and seeing if they can predict who will win. There are 32 conferences, and the champion of each is guaranteed a spot in the March Madness tournament. The other 36 teams are chosen by the Selection Committee. The tournament starts in mid-March and ends with the championship game in early April. There are seven rounds played, and a round is usually played over 2 days. Instead of a seven game series like the NBA, March Madness is single elimination tourney, win or go home. If you win one game, you move on. This creates the opportunity for many upsets, or for an underdog team to beat a team thought to be better. Upsets and “Cinderella stories” are a big part of March Madness. The Cinderella stories, the close games and the high stakes of a championship tournament help make March Madness one of the most watched sports events in America.
