Students rejoice as Caps end losing streak

The Caps have not lost four straight games since Nov. 2007, and the newly named Captain Alexander Ovechkin would not let his team down as the Washington Capitals defeat the Montreal Canadians 4-2 in Verizon Center as their three game losing streak finally comes to an end.

Eric Fehr stayed red hot against the Canadians by netting his tenth goal of the year while Alexander Semin registered two goals, one of which ended up as the game winner while caps goaltender Michael Neuvirth continues to be dominant in goal.

The newly named captain, Alex Ovechkin, registered three shots on goal, one which struck iron early in the first period, but was held pointless.

The opportunities were there for both teams as both Alex Semin of the Capitals and Benoit Pouliot of the Canadians both missed empty nets in the games opening five minutes.

Thomas Fleischmann opened the scoring at 5:14 into the second period for the Caps on a power play, however almost nine minutes later Josh Georges tied up at one for Montreal. But the second period scoring was not done there, as Eric Fehr’s backhand shot deflected of Georges to put the Caps up 2-1, Semin scored 36 seconds later. Mike Knuble almost cost the Caps late in regulation with two penalties; one was scored on by Benoit Pouliot.

How ever Semin saved him by shooting a rocket top shelf on Canadians goaltender Carey Price with 2:02 left. The Caps would protect the lead to win it 4-2.

The caps were on a three game losing streak, being outscored 13-6 in those three games. All those game were without their former captain Chris Clark, who was traded to Columbus along with defense-man Milan Juricina in exchange for winger Jason Chimera a day before the game versus the Carolina Hurricanes, where all the Caps trouble started.

“It was a good trade because they got extra cap room to make a deal later in the year,” Said Sophomore William Bennett about the trade

As for Ovechkin being captain, much of D.C. advocated him as a favored choice. “I think it should be Ovechkin because he’s the best one on the team,” said Sophomore Max Talley, when asked about who should be captain. Moments later, the Caps selected “Ovie”, thus beginning a new era of Caps hockey.
