Fashion with compassion

The fashion-marketing students are keeping busy as they prepare for their annual fashion show. This year the show’s theme is “Fashion with Compassion” which promotes animal friendliness in the fashion industry.

Many stores and fashion lines use leather, fur and wool from animals that cause a lot of physiological, emotional and physical harm to them. The organization PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) has been spreading the cause of animal compassion through videos on their website showing the suffering animals have to go through just to make a garment or accessory.

The fashion industry is not the only one dealing with animal cruelty; the beauty industry is also greatly involved. Many cosmetic companies first test their products on animals by “pumping their products into animals” stomachs, rubbing it on their skin, squirting into their eyes, or forcing animals to inhale them as aerosol sprays,” according to PETA.

“We want to make people aware of how much suffering animals have to go through to make certain types of clothes and that they can find cute clothes that cause no harm to animals” says junior Caroline Hill who is the one of the show directors.

Each student in the fashion marketing class is assigned several tasks to do before and the day of the show. Some students are working on promotions while others are calling businesses to get vendors for the show.

“Today, I am helping making banners to get the word out about the show,” said junior Tatiana Daza.

The show will be held in Clausen hall on February 18. Tickets will be sold the week prior to the show during all lunches.
