Academy Awards entertain

This years Academy Awards, or more commonly known as the Oscars awards ceremony was definitely one to remember. With comedian Ellen DeGeneres as the host, a good time was expected.
The show was filled with all of the film industry’s big names and a few newcomers who made a big splash, like Kenyan Lupita Nyong’o. Nyong’o is known for her film debut in 12 Years A Slave, a historical drama film that was named Best Picture. Her emotional acceptance speech after receiving the Oscar for best supporting actress is one for the books. Her beautiful speech and matching personality shined through when she uplifted everyone watching by saying “No matter where you are from, your dreams are valid.”
Apart from Nyong’o, there were other key players in this year’s Academy Awards, including Leonardo DiCaprio. Unlike other actors and actresses, DiCaprio was recognized for what he didn’t get. His much wanted and deserved Oscar. Soon after the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role was awarded to Matthew MCConaughey for Dallas Buyers’ Club, a twitter page was created titled Leonardo’s Oscar. This accounted quickly tweeted multiple times saying, “hi yes I am still waiting” and “Can Django unchain me? I need to get to Leo.”
Another funny moment was when DeGeneres brought in pizzas and went around the crowd hanging out slices. It was later revealed in an interview that DeGeneres refused to use an actor and that the man holding the pizzas was the actual pizza delivery guy who didn’t know what was going on until he got inside.
The highlight of the night was the amazing selfie that included DeGeneres, Meryl Streep, Jennifer Lawrence, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Bradley Cooper, Lupita Nyong’o, Nyong’o’s brother, Julia Roberts, Kevin Spacey, Channing Tatum and a part of Jared Leto’s face, coming out to a total of 12 A-List celebrities all in one selfie. DeGeneres’ reason for taking the picture was to try to get the most retweets ever; she got her wish. Within a few minutes of her posting the picture, Twitter had crashed and the number of retweets was climbing. It eventually reached over three million retweets.
Although the Academy Awards is an awards show, this year it was full of comedy and entertainment, with performances from artists like Pink and Pharrell. The awards were just an added bonus.
