The Billboard Music Award is awarded annually, by Billboard, to people with outstanding chart performance. The 2019 Billboard Music Awards was held on May 1 in Las Vegas, Nevada. This year’s BBMA’s host was singer songwriter Kelly Clarkson. Rapper Cardi B ended up leading the nominees with 21 nominations in 18 categories at the 2019 BBMA’s. These are some of the notable nominees, winners, and performances:

The show kicked off with Taylor Swift performing her new single, “ME!”, live for the first time  with Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco. Their performance included reenactments of the music videos colorful briefcase dance. The performance ended with dancers, including Urie and Swift, holding on to umbrellas attached to the roof. After the performance, Clarkson took over as the host.

Other performers included Mariah Carey, who performed a selection of her greatest hits, and who also won an Icon Award; BTS and Halsey, who sang “Boy With Luv”; Ariana Grande with “7 Rings”; Halsey with “Without Me”; Khalid with “Talk”; Madonna and Maluma, who sang “Medellin”; Panic! At The Disco with “Hey Look Ma, I Made It”; and the Jonas Brothers, who sang “Sucker”.

Cardi B received a total of 21 nominations (making her the most-nominated artist for the 2019 Billboard Music Awards) in categories such as, Top Female Artist, Top Artist, Top Rap Artist, and Top Rap Album.

The nominees for Top Artists were Cardi B, Ariana Grande, Post Malone, Drake, and Travis Scott. Drake won Top Artists, in fact he ended up winning 12 awards making him the most awarded artist in BBMA history, with a total of 27. Drake also won Top Male Artist beating fellow nominees Post Malone, Travis Scott, Ed Sheeran, and XXXTENTACION. Drake won in categories such as Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top Hot 100 Artist, Top Streaming Songs Artist, and Top Song Sales Artist.

“I think that Drake’s success was well-deserved because his music is really good and all his hard work paid off,” sophomore Israa Kay said, “I’m excited to see the new music he creates in the future.”

Juice WRLD ended up winning Top New Artist, beating Bazzi, Lil Baby, Dua Lipa, and Ella Mai. Ariana Grande won Billboard Chart Achievement Award, beating nominees Dan + Shay, Drake, Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper, and Dua Lipa. Grande also won Top Female Artist. The nominees for Top Duo/Group were Panic! At The Disco, Imagine Dragons, Dan + Shay, and Maroon 5, BTS ended up winning.
