Deep Water recently came out on Hulu and it has been a hit. I’ve seen it all over social media people raving about the movie. This left me no choice but to watch it to see what all the rave was about.
This movie starts kind of slow. We see the relationship between Vic Van Allen (played by Ben Affleck) and Melinda Van Allen (played by Ana de Armas) and how it’s not a normal relationship. Vic allows his wife Melinda to mess with other people while he sits by and watches her flaunt her relationships all over town to avoid a divorce.
At first, I wonder why he would let his wife talk to other people in front of him but we soon learn why he’s okay with it.
Vic and Melinda attend a party where Ricky (played by Jacob Elordi, who is Melinda’s lover) is also present. Melinda and Ricky run off and Vic watches as they were making out. He is visibly upset but doesn’t do anything.
Later in the scene, Ricky runs into Vin in the kitchen alone and they have a conversation. Right away Vic tells Ricky to back off of his wife because the last person that got too close got killed. Vic later tells Ricky that he was the one who killed him and scares Ricky off.
You would think that when he confessed to the murder that he would get locked up but he doesn’t, which is so peculiar. Instead, Vic and his friends laughed about it the next day and didn’t take it seriously.
This movie, while kind of slow, keeps a good pace. It goes by relatively fast and the dramatic irony is intense. I love how monotone the main character is, he doesn’t show many emotions and when he does it’s not as dramatic.
It makes you wonder how they even got to this point. I would give this movie an 8/10 just because it’s a little cliché but the overall plot is good. It’s only an hour and 45 minutes so it’s a very quick watch. I recommend this movie to anyone that likes drama and thrillers.
