Should Eid become a federal holiday? No. Making Eid a federal holiday would in essence make Islam a national religion of the US.
Freedom of Religion is provided by the US Constitution’s first amendment. The United States
intentionally does not claim any national religion as that would violate religious liberty. The
establishment of a religious federal holiday, whether Muslim, Jewish, Hindu, or Christian, would
make that religion a national religion.
Then why is Christmas a federal holiday? Though Christmas has a Christian background, it is
celebrated more as an American cultural holiday. District Court Judge Dlott ruled that in making
Christmas a federal holiday “the government is doing no more than recognizing the cultural
significance of the holiday.”
