Soccer Club crowns new FIFA champion

Each month, AHS Soccer Club holds a FIFA Tournament that is open to all students from 9th to 12th grade. Each FIFA Tournament consists of 16 participants playing for the right to be crowned “AHS FIFA Champion.” Out of the 16 competitive players, senior Adrian Salinas won this month’s FIFA Tournament.

Adrian Salinas is only the second student in AHS Soccer Club history to have won this tournament. The first and former winner was class of 2015 alumni, Luis Barahona who won it in January of 2015. “It feels good to have won this tournament because I’m making history in this activity” Salinas said.

In his road to the finals, he had to overcome one of the toughest opponents in the tournament such as seniors Naol Bayisa, Diego Angulo, Abdullah Aljaaf and club president Faisal Hassen. He finished the tournament with one skunk (3-0)  against Bayisa in the first round, a 2-0 victory against Hassen and two penalty wins against Angulo and Aljaaf. “I think they did great, even though I skunked Naol, the rest were a bit of a challenge, especially Abdullah” Salinas said.

The 16 participants were all contenders for the title, but some did not make it due to last minute plans. Therefore, some had to forfeit and surrender their spot to another person. “All 16 participants were challengers for the title but it would’ve been more interesting if some didn’t forfeit.” Salinas said.

The next FIFA Tournament will be sometime around November and Salinas is already looking to come back and defend his title. “I will come back next month to win yet again for the second time in a row” Salinas said. If Salinas does in fact win the next tournament, he’ll be the first person in the club to win back to back tournaments. But for now, the streak begins.
