The fear factor; just hours after Donald Trump, businessman and former Celebrity Apprentice host was elected the new leader of the free world many people are left feeling uncertain. The hazy sight for the future, accompanied with the rain was prevalent both in and out of the school building as some teachers and students were seen crying in the hallways this morning. It was overheard that various students now fear that coming to school will set them up to be captured and put on a truck, headed back to their home country, a thought they didn’t have five days prior.

Fairfax County voted blue, helping to overcome the predominantly Republican southern part of the state, resulting in the 13 electoral votes Virginia holds going to Trump’s opposition, Hillary Clinton. Nonetheless, Trump, defeated all odds and overcame Clinton last night in the nail biting presidential race. It came down to the wire nationwide, making every vote count as there was a measly difference between the two candidates. It was announced, however, by the early hours of the morning that Trump triumphed, claiming 279 electoral votes, putting him above the 270 needed to win.

Trump was not the popular candidate at Annandale according to a poll conducted earlier this year that revealed only around 18% of students support him as opposed to the 63% standing behind Clinton. Many students find his character most appalling.

“If [Trump] was less arrogant and cared more about the people I think more people would like him,” senior Fatmata Kamara said.

His viewpoints and comments also cause a ruckus, especially since in northern Virginia minorities are a majority and Annandale, specifically, is one of the most diverse high schools in the nation. The racist and misogynistic views that Trump often portrays is something that many students and faculty fear will have a great impact on the diversity that our community thrives on.

However, Assistant Principal Jamie Carayiannis feels differently “I think [Trumps presidency] will be a heck of a lot better than most people think, they have this preconceived idea of what they think he is going to do. I think the media has demonized [Trump] in so many ways. I think he is a winner and that’s what our country needs right now.”

There is also hope that despite Trump’s lack of political experience he will make a great leader due to the fact that he knows how to hire the right people to get the job done; he can also learn as he goes.

“It is clear to me that [Trump] got better and better and better as time wore on and by the end of it he was a polished, articulate politician, that people really thought was great,” Carayiannis said. “I think he’s going to hire the right people to help him.”
