Cross Country crosses the finish line

Wednesday, Oct. 28 the AHS cross country team had its final district meet. Months of training and hundreds of practice miles all led up to this final race.

The girl’s varsity team ran first, led by junior Caroline Kane who finished the three mile race in 22 minutes and 51 seconds. Only four varsity girls ran, with juniors Oliva Ko, Victoria Ko, Natalie Johnson and Jessica Camilli out sick. Resultantly, the team finished last in the district. However, the relatively young girls team, consisting mostly of juniors, anticipates a significantly improved finish next year.

“You have to do the best with what you have,” said assistant coach Jessica Raynor.

The boy’s varsity team had similar afflictions, with lead runner Michael Ejigu out of the race with an injured ankle.

“As much as I wanted to be out there with my team, and as hard as it was to see them out there running, I was happy with how they did and I don’t think they could have had a better season,” said Ejigu.

Sophomore Ahmed Bile finished first for AHS with a time of 16:48, and an overall place of 19th. The school placed sixth overall. Only the top 15 individual runners, and the top four fastest schools advance to the regional race.

“We had a great season,” said head coach Phillip Harris. “We ran our best.”
