Are you watching?

“Did you see that race last night,” “what about the crash?” These are what most students around Annandale High School are talking about these days. The Winter Olympic Games are on everyone’s mind around this time of year. It’s like a religious ritual. Tweets on Twitter, Facebook statuses, and Myspace updates have all been about the Winter Olympic Games.

Not only is the Winter Olympic Games fun to watch, but educational at the same time. Students at Annandale are exposed to many sports which they probably wouldn’t have come across if not for watching.

Sophomore Kim Rowland explains “The sport curling is very interesting. It’s actually influenced me by giving me a motivation to sweep the kitchen floor like they sweep the ice”

Curling has actually surprised many students. The unique sport has its positive and negative views. Some see it as the most pointless and boring sport. Like junior Bashir Warsame who stated “I’ve watched curling, but it is definitely not interesting. I think it’s boring. But it has influenced me by making me thing less of the Olympics.” While some, like History teacher Mr. York find it hard to turn off.

Additional students took the liberty of letting us in on their favorite sports to watch. Junior Ashton Johnson shared his exciting new discovery with Cycling.

“I have been newly introduced to Cycling, but nevertheless it is still an awesome sport. I do ride my bicycle, but watching the Olympians do it was phenomenal. The way they raced around in circles trying to catch one another was very interesting. It has definitely made me wish all this snow was gone so I could ride mine [bike] more often. Now when I’m in weight training and we do bicycle for abs, I imagine myself trying to catch whoever is in front of me; it’s pretty cool,” said Ashton.

However for some students, the Winter Olympic Games have just been another thing to switch to when nothing else is on, or simply not watch at all.

Senior Sammy Qabazard explains “I only watch hockey and snowboarding everything else is boring to me.”

Sophomore Kylee Nisker agreed with Qabazard, stating “Snowboarding is definitely the only thing I really watch because I like to see them [snowboarders] do tricks and everything while still trying to race for time; it takes serious skill.”

Well, while the Winter Olympic Games are still on, it is definitely something to tune into once in awhile, and even support our fellow American athletes in their events. The U.S. seems to be making a big statement by collecting the most medals. How many do you think we’ll get this year?
