Atoms go to State Tournament

After top scores and strong efforts the Atoms maintained an undefeated season but due to inclimate weather, alternative judging practices were used to determine the district standings, causing the Atoms to ultimately place second in the district.

Although there ended up being no district tournament, the boys varsity track team competed in the Northern Region competition and then continued on to the Virginia state tournament with success from all events in the competition. All AHS team members that attended the tournament placed in the top 17.

“Having no district competition was disappointing because we truly believed that we had the best team and would have won the district championship,” said head coach Sean Miller. “The regional and state results proved that.”

Team members attending the state tournament included Elizabeth Flint in the triple jump, finishing 14th overall while also achieving her best personal score.

Other athletes included Ahmed Bile who finished 10th overall in the 1000m, Michael Ejigu finished 12th in the 1000m, Daniel Blasser competed in the 500m  and Jack Griffin in the 55m hurdles. John Jenkins also placed 7th in the 55m hurdles, which earned him all state honors.

Coaches were happy with the outcome and anticipate their success will continue to motivate the team members that are going to continue their season on in the spring. The Atoms hope to see their undefeated district record going by continuing to train hard and improve for next year’s winter season as well.

“I  was very happy with the state tournament. It was great to see our athletes go down there and give their best effort. It will give us a ton of momentum heading into the outdoor season,” said Miller.

Overall the team members look back on a positive season but realize that they were not able to achieve their ultimate goal of winning a district title, but also proud of their accomplishments in the State and Regional Tournaments.

“We didn’t get to compete as much as we would have liked however our practices and the results we got will carry over to a promising outdoor season,” said senior Daniel Blasser.
