Will Students ever Adapt to the New Normal?

Following the spiral of Covid-19 cases in Virginia, Governor Ralph Northam announces new statewide measures to restighten laws, delaying in-person learning.

Coronavirus cases in our community are rapidly evolving. Sad to say, Virginia has reached a record of cases daily. 

This left the Fairfax County Superintendent with choices to be made, regarding the return of in-person learning. Superintendent Scott Brabrand ruled to put a hold on the return to school plans. Recognizing the importance of the safety of students and families.

Parents advocating for returning to school worry their children have lost their rights to proper education. “Open FCPS”,  angered parents continuously demand, believing children and families deserve better.

 Concerns arise regarding mental health of students participating in virtual learning due to lack of normality, lack of social interaction, and increased workloads. Students must become accustomed to the unusualality of virtual learning. 

“Online school has been mentally draining because I am working to balance IB courses and work on the weekends,” Junior Olivia Epperly said.  I feel a sense of isolation because the high school experience includes being able to see friends daily while building strong relationships.”

Social interaction, such as collaborating with their peers is essential when teachers hold students accountable and demand engagement.

“I feel my first year of high school being online, helped me to develop time management skills by learning to focus during classes while getting my work done on time”, Freshman Lydia Hailu said.

Most students see eye to eye as far as thoughts on virtual learning. “Teachers have high expectations and sometimes it feels like they assume we don’t have other responsibilities,” Junior Fatu Kalokoh said. “Personally I have to balance school, work, and watch my younger siblings and my joy in learning has faded because my main focus became turning in assignments while meeting deadlines.”

Teachers and students must communicate to develop an understanding of each other.  Establishing positive bonds can impact students to feel comfortable in a safe environment influencing the increase in the engagement of learning.

The delay of in-person learning forces students to aim for an improved learning environment. 

 Adapting to the new school habits may be challenging, key components include gaining a level of understanding and communication. Students can’t demand change without striving to do their part. Engagement. Time management. Eliminating Distractions. The courses of action listed can ultimately enhance the online learning experience.
