Buy It or Bag It

What do you prefer to eat during lunchtime at school? According to a recent survey conducted, the ideal lunch that students like to have during the 30-minute time period, includes a Powerade bottle, a soft-bread taco, some baked fries, and a salad or fruit serving on the side. The students who purchase this particular meal are part of a small percentage that buy their lunch. According to a survey conducted by The A-Blast, a majority of students said that they favored a bagged lunch over bought school lunch.

Most students like to bring in their lunch from home because they would rather eat foods they consider healthy. Others choose to buy their lunch, but at the same time, they also choose to have a bagged lunch. Understandably, many students do not have enough time to pack a lunch in the mornings because they are rushing to get to class on time and and it is one less thing to worry about.

“I buy my lunch in the cafeteria, but I would rather bring in a bagged lunch,” senior Mohammad Taha said.

The one aspect most students dread about lunch is the fact that the lunch lines are so long and most of the time, other people cut them. But one of the things that they look forward to is a hot and ready lunch, which cannot always be said for a bagged lunch.

Cafeteria food is more convenient, but is not as healthy as a bagged lunch would be. Some students like their own bagged lunches better because they feel that they do not have to wonder about what is in their food. But others do not like the fact that they would have to carry their bag around or keep it in their locker.

Typically, students prefer the baked fries, but would rather not have the sweet potatoes. They also like the various sandwiches including the chicken sandwich.

“I prefer bringing in a bagged lunch because I can make what I wan,” said Junior Omar Abdulrahim.

Although that is what he felt, other students feel that bringing in a bagged lunch every day would be a burden and “hassle” on them because they might forget to bring it sometimes. Others said that the same foods are not always served in the different lines, which leads them regretting going to a certain line instead of another, because they wanted a particular item in the line that they were not in.

A lot of students feel that they see the same foods daily, even though there is a variety of items to choose from. The foods that are served are considered predictable because the same foods are served every week. Students think that the school should update the choices in the cafeteria to what they are more interested in such as Chipotle, Subway, and McDonalds. One student even mentioned that there used to be a deli line, and feels that the school should consider bringing it back.

Lunch is a time for students to catch up with their friends and it is also a little break from school work for most of them.Other students feel that the lines could be more organized in a way that they have more time to eat. Many students let their friends come in front of them, which frustrates others students who are waiting patiently in line. Some feel that they spend more time in line then actually eating the food they bought. They later feel bad that they wasted their money and ended up wasting most of their food.

Although, the prices are considered reasonable, students feel that they should not be charged for extra condiments. Many even stated that it was one of the reasons why they do not buy their lunch. A few said that it was because of the appearance of their food and the speed of service that made them decide to bring their lunch.

Overall, the survey concludes that many students do not like spending their lunch time in line, and they feel that the cafeteria should manage the lines better. Many students feel that they have more time to eat when they bring in their lunch. A final suggestion for the school is to provide more serving lines or give the students more time to eat.
