I have recently started dating a new guy, but my brother hates him. My brother doesn’t know that I’m dating him because we’re still in our beginning stages of dating, but I know he’ll be mad if I tell him. My brother and I are somewhat close, but since I’m his younger sister he’s very protective of me. How can I get my brother to give the guy I’m dating a chance?

Whether you and your brother are close to each other or not, it’s important to maintain an open relationship with him because you two are siblings and will be connected for the rest of your lives. That being said, don’t shut your brother out just because you are dating someone new. Your brother probably doesn’t really hate this guy, he is probably just doing his job as your older brother and protecting you from guys that have the potential to hurt or distract you. Try casually bringing your new fling up to your brother when telling a funny story, or even try and plan a hangout such as watching a sporting event or kicking around a soccer ball with your brother and guy you’re dating to try and encourage some male bonding. Finding little ways to get your brother to trust your guy is the key to starting a friendship between them.
