YeChon

From the outside of the YeChon Korean Japanese Restaurant it may seem questionable to enter. The crazy, blinking neon signs, tacky wooden siding and the twinkle lights might lead you to think that the restaurant is more of a bar then a classy place to eat.

Dare to step inside this always crowded restaurant and you will be pleasantly surprised to be greeted with beautifully crafted wood decorations as well as aromas that will make your mouth water.

As we sat down our menus where instantly brought to us as well as two glasses of ice cold water. Waitresses in brightly-colored traditional clothing buzzed around the restaurant carrying heaping plates of food as we glanced over the extensive menu.

As soon as we ordered the shrimp tempura and the fried rice to share, our table for four was completely covered in small dishes filled with different little appetizers.

These small dishes are commonly known as banchan, which refers to small portions of food served with rice, and meant to be shared. Some of the banchan that we tried includes salted green seaweed, mashed potatoes, dried fish, cool radishes, and pickled cabbages. However our favorite dish was actually sweet onions is a sweet sauce. It was so good and we thought they were apples until the waitress told us otherwise.Try them all if you are brave enough: if you like one more than the other, they will keep replenishing the dish for as long as your heart desires.

Our food arrived just as we were finishing with the banchan even though the restaurant was quickly filling up. The dinner portion of the shrimp tempura consisted of six pieces of abnormally long shrimp covered in lightly-fried batter as well as various pieces of vegetables that were also fried in the same delicious batter. The fried shrimp and vegetables were crunchy and light yet very filling.

The fried carrot sticks were sweet and something new we both had never tried before. We quickly found that the fried shrimp and vegetables tasted absolutely wonderful when dipped in the dipping sauce that was brought out with the banchan. We also discovered that dipping sauce was a wonderful addition to the steamy fried rice. We recommend you go to this restaurant with a friend and share what you order.

The only negative thing about YeChon is that it is a bit pricy, with our check coming to be about thirty dollars including tip. However, we left the restaurant stuffed and with leftovers to take home which served as our lunch the next day, so it was definitely worth it. YeChon is a great place to go if you are looking for a meal late a night or on a holiday because they are open 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Head to their website listed to the right to get more details on their menu, lunch specials and other reviews of the restaurant.
