Gymnasts plan to stick it

AHS’ very own girl’s Varsity Gymnastics team will have their first meet of the season on Thursday, Dec 10, 2009 at 6:30 P.M. at Lake Braddock Secondary School.

The AHS gymnasts have been vigorously preparing for their meet. The gymnasts are given complex routines in which they must repeatedly practice in order for them to do well during the meet. The gymnastics team’s coach, Ellen Hagan-Bowerman, said, “The girls prepare everyday by practicing their routines on one or more of the four events.”

AHS gymnast Junior Sam Pokraka said, “Practice, practice, practice. Practice makes perfect.”

According to a leading source, one of the many routines that some of the gymnasts perform is the beam routine. The beam routine begins with a jump on the high beam, a half turn, then a hand stand, then a pivot proceeded with dance moves, a full 360 degree turn, a scale, then a leap and a crouch. Others perform another pivot, “pop” up, two hops forward, then three jumps, two backwards roll and finally a dismount wherein the gymnasts add their own taste into the routine. Needless to say, the routines are not simple.

It is easy for gymnasts to get nervous before meets when they must execute such complex routines. However, many of the gymnasts are not worried at all about their most recent meet.

AHS gymnastics team’s captain, Junior Adrienne Williams said, “I feel like we’ll do really well because we work really hard and practice to perfect our routines.” Due to the hard work and practice the girls of the AHS Varsity Gymnastics team have done, they are sure to do well.
