Should there be homework over break?

Is homework really necessary over school breaks? They are called breaks for a reason, right? There are many different breaks that happen over the course of the school year but is it really a break if students have to worry about doing homework or study for a test/quiz the day they come back.

Breaks such as Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring are long breaks to give students the chance to relax and unwind from all of the hard work they are putting in.

Some teachers think it is necessary to give homework so that they are still gaining knowledge while they are relaxing.

Other teachers believe that students should use this time to relax and not worry about any assignments. “I don’t think that they should get homework over break because it’s a chance for them to relax and recharge before we come back to school. So just like teachers, I feel like students definitely need the break as well,” History & Social Studies Teacher Ashley Senior said.

Students, on the other hand, do not want homework. They believe that they work really hard during school so they deserve a break where they don’t have to stress about anything. “I think there is no point to school breaks if teachers give homework because students will not be having a break, instead they will be doing the homework teachers assign,” sophomore Niyat Ghiorghis said.

Most students use school breaks to relax and unwind from the stress of school. “School is very stressful and I think that breaks help us take some of that stress away. Breaks are more enjoyable if we don’t get homework because we can focus on having time off from school,” junior Tsenat Efrem said.
