Hot or Flop: Oscars Red Carpet 2022

Hot+or+Flop%3A+Oscars+Red+Carpet+2022

The Oscars have finally happened! The annual event that everyone looks forward to which celebrates the accomplishments of the movie industry took place on March 27, and it was a night filled with surprises.

While some are more preoccupied with Will Smith rocking Chris Rock on live TV, we’re more preoccupied with the looks these celebrities have to offer. From the hottest of hots to the floppiest of flops, we’re going to be rating some of the looks from the 2022 Red Carpet.

We’ll be rating on a scale of one to ten and giving our personal favorites at the end. Remember, these are our opinions, so don’t come for us!

With that, let’s get started.

First off is the host for this year’s Oscars, Amy Schumer! Comedian first, actress second, most people are well-aware as to who Amy Schumer is. From her Netflix specials to “I Feel Pretty,” Amy Schumer is not new to the public eye.

Cal: This is the ugliest thing I’ve ever seen. It’s a navy blue nightgown you get from the women’s section at Macy’s that your five-year-old kid decorates with Elmer’s glitter glue. 3/10, would flop again.

Michelle: Was it the worst outfit this year? No, was it the best? Also no. This was disappointing after seeing the masterpiece Oscar De La Renta did for Billie Eilish’s Met Gala look. Overall, there’s nothing much to say due to its lack of adequacy, 3/10.

Next up is Disney Channel starlet turned Euphoria cash cow, Zendaya! Truly, a celebrity that needs no introduction. She’s always known for going big on the Red Carpet with her stunning looks.

Cal: Dress-tile dysfunction. This look is among the simpler of Zendaya’s outfits and I’m honestly kind of shocked. The plain, crop top dress shirt with the sparkly, long skirt? This outfit confuses me to no end. If she swapped out the crop top for a halter top of the same fabric, this would’ve been pretty. Otherwise, 5/10.

Michelle: There’s nothing Zendaya can’t make look good; she somehow always makes it work. I don’t think this was one of her best Oscars outfits, but it 100 percent wasn’t the worst. Somehow, it fits perfectly with her acting career and the significant roles she has acted in the past year. 6.5/10

Next up is one of the many faces of America’s one percent, Kourtney Kardashian!

Cal: Very plain for a Kardashian. I never really followed them, I just know of their existence and I’ve seen what they can give. A black dress that looks like a blanket isn’t the most exciting thing to bring to the Red Carpet. It honestly looks like a dress from JCPenny. 4/10, it’s better than Amy Schumer.

Michelle: There’s not much commentary on this; It’s a very last-minute dress; it’s not the suitable type of plain you want on a red carpet. Given her after-party looks, she could have done way better than this. 4/10.

Up next is actor David Oyelowo! He’s a British actor that’s seen his fair share of roles in cinema, having his foot in films like “A Wrinkle in Time, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, The Cloverfield Paradox, and weirdly enough Peter the Rabbit 2: The Runaway.

Cal: Thank you David Oyelowo for showing men that they can wear something other than a monochromatic suit. I think this pattern looks great on him and it’s a welcome change from the millions of other outfits that many other actors have worn on the red carpet. 7/10, love flowers.

Michelle: I wouldn’t say I liked it as much as I should have. The pattern and color give me very much cells under a microscope vibe. It’s certainly something that can grab someone’s attention, I get the idea they wanted to send, but it was a pretty lousy execution, in my opinion. B- for effort and not wearing a boring black suit, 5/10.

Next on the list is Nicole Kidman! She’s an American-Australian actress who’s had just as much of a hold on the film industry as David Oyelowo. She’s been in Aquaman, Batman Forever and she’s been in Moulin Rouge for crying out loud! What hasn’t she done?

Cal: And the academy award for worst outfit of the night goes to… Nicole Kidman. This outfit is indecisive. It wants to be a tutu and a nightgown simultaneously, not to mention the weird, tailcoat-ESC situation happening. It’s frumpy, it’s gray and it’s so unflattering. I think if the designer didn’t take inspiration from an identity crisis this would’ve been pretty. 2/10, congratulations Nicole Kidman you’re worse than Amy.

Michelle: I would love to see the back of this dress; I need the complete execution, you know? This isn’t good; I think that it would have looked so much better if the dress ended at the tutu and left her legs bare with some nice heels. Overall, it’s very overwhelming, not in a good way, but at least the necklace matches the dress, 3/10.

She’s the princess of anti-pop, Billie Eilish is next up on our list! Ever since 2020 at the take-off of her career, Billie has been everywhere. On top of her very successful career, Billie Eilish is the first person born in the 21st century to have won an Oscar. How neat is that?

Cal: I’m conflicted. This fabric is very pretty, but the dress itself just swallows her up. It’s a fine outfit, but I just want to see her shape. It’s formless and it looks a little unflattering on Billie, who we’ve seen is capable of giving amazing looks like Zendaya. However, I’d also argue that formlessness is a part of her style as we’ve come to see. It’s on-brand, but would I personally wear it? No. Plus, it looks heavy, which can make it difficult to drag around for a smaller person like Billie. Overall, a fair 7/10.

Michelle: I don’t think this is something most people would wear, not just because of how hot it looks and how hard it looks to style but because it doesn’t suit most people. This was underwhelming, and a total change of mood from her Met Gala look. She went from a captured princess on the top of the tower to being the person who captured the princes. Overall is underwhelming, but what else can you expect from a Gucci ball gown? 5.5/10.

Another girl that needs no introduction, is Megan The Stallion! Ever since her hit single with Cardi B, along with her cover of “We Don’t Talk About” Bruno from Encanto, she’s been making waves in the music industry and social media as a whole. It’s a no-brainer that she would’ve been here!

Cal: I already had such high expectations for Megan The Stallion and oh boy was I not let down. The structure of the dress is absolutely beautiful and it compliments her form so well. She looks like a mermaid in a field of coral and I live for it. Whoever her designer is, someone gives them a raise. I want to wear this so badly but at the same time, I don’t want to ruin it. Megan The Stallion always knows how to give her best and she maintained her status as a fashionable celebrity. 10/10, put this in a museum.

Michelle: Megan’s dress is something that I would find in an art gallery. Not the free ones you can go to but those that cost 1,000 dollars to get in. The dress color fits her so well, especially with her heels. I don’t know how Gaurav Gupta made this look so rich and classy, but I 100% give him my applause for this. 10/10.

Last but not least, the target of Chris Rock’s personally served up slap and the slapper himself, Jada and Will Smith!

Cal: Bald is beautiful and so is this dress. It’s a very interesting take on the train and it looks great on Jada. The fabric is made in a way that makes it look structured and kind of like rock. However, it’s due to this same structure of the dress that it suffers the same problem as Nicole Kidman’s tutu, it’s frumpy. It also has a seemingly similar problem to Billie’s dress, it looks heavy. As cool as it looks, it must’ve been really hard for Jada to walk around in a dress as big as this. However, despite its flaws, it’s still a stunning gown. 9/10, a glorious gown. And Will Smith is just Will Smith. 1/10, he looks like every other actor wearing a tuxedo.

Michelle: The color of Jada’s dress is fantastic; I love how the dark green mixes with the black and makes it look like a particular type of emerald. The top of the dress reminds me of a scuba diving suit, and the bottom is just something. The back of the dress is too long, which makes it seem like a carpet. I don’t think it’s heavy, but I still feel it is hard to walk with; overall is a 5/10. Will’s outfit is just a plain suit, nothing much to it; they would have looked better if he had chosen a dark green tie to match Jada, 5/10.

And that concludes our review of the Red Carpet! This Red Carpet was definitely one of the more underwhelming Red Carpets the Oscar has seen.It could’ve been because of the pandemic, but regardless, the attendees of this event didn’t bring what we know we know they could’ve brought.

There were many other looks that night that could’ve made it on the list, but these were our personal picks. Let’s hope that the other events to follow this year can do much better than what the Oscars gave.

Favorite look of the night: Megan The Stallion.
