Q and A with chemistry teacher Deborah Maletz on Black History Month

Q: What does Black History Month mean to you?

A: Black History Month is a time to focus on History of a specific group: African American experience.

Q: Who do you think is the best black historical figure that impacted the world?

A: Barack Obama is a very important black historical figure. He was the first US African-American president and he did so much good for the world and our country. For example: he did the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. He also sanctioned the same-sex marriage. He also won the Nobel Peace Prize for his work and international diplomacy.

Q: What do you like the most about Black History Month?

A: I like that it gives us a chance to reflect, think about and honor the neglected accomplishments of African-Americans. For me, I like learning about African-Americans, studying about them, and learning about their music. One of my favorite types of music is Jazz. My favorite artist is Duke Ellington.

Q: Do you feel like any black historical figure made a difference or inspired you, if so, who was it and how?

A: Maya Angelou was a writer and a poet; my favorite quote by her is: If you don’t like something, change it. If you can’t change it, change your attitude. She has other inspiring quotes that keep me going.

A: One thing that I like about Black History Month is that it will create an engagement with the black histories to young people, students and highlight black leader accomplishments.

Q: Do you feel like any black historical figure made a difference or inspired you, if so, who was it and how?

A: Martin Luther King had inspired me because of his ‘I Have a Dream’ speech. It makes me feel like I should neve give up on things that will happen in my life because of what I look like and who I am.

A: Black History Month is an opportunity for me to learn more about Black History and a chance to celebrate amazing people.

Q: Who do you think is the best black historical figure that impacted the world?

A: I really don’t know! There’s so many to choose from I don’t know how I could possibly pick one.

Q: What do you like the most about Black History Month?

A: I like learning something new every day! I follow a lot of people who make daily posts all month so I am always learning. For example I recently learned about two African American folk singers whom I had never heard of, Joe Gilbert and Eddie Brown.

Q: Do you feel like any black historical figure made a difference or inspired you, if so, who was it and how?

A: There are so many it’s hard to pick one but I think the person who most inspired me is Sojourner Truth. She is best known for her ”Ain’t I a Woman” speech which speaks so well to the challenges and strengths of being a woman: “Look at me! Look at my arm! I have plowed and planted.. And ain’t I a woman?”
