The Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery (ASVAB) is a multi aptitude test available to students in grades 10-12 conducted by the U.S. military to determine enlistment and job placement by measuring students’ abilities in different subjects such as arithmetic reasoning, paragraph comprehension, general science, and automotive knowledge.
College and Career Specialist Viri Acosta manages registration for the ASVAB test.
Students who have passed the ASVAB receive medals at graduation, and the medal is the reason some students take the test. These medals are not standard at all schools, and AHS administration purchases the medals to incentivize the students to take the
test.
“That schools are evaluated based upon the students who take the ASVAB and the success that they have on that test this year,” Principal Shawn Derose
said. “So I want to incentivize that right as much as possible, and having an amazing medal is one of the ways that I incentivize it.”
The medal was decisive for junior Annie Doan: “I took the test because I heard about receiving a medal at graduation,” Doan said.
While some may only take the test to earn the medal, there are great benefits to taking the test.
“One of the greatest benefits is its value as a career exploration tool,” Acosta said. “The ASVAB helps students understand both their interests and their aptitudes, allowing them to make more informed decisions about future careers.”
The ASVAB test is being taken today, and this is the last opportunity to take the test this school year.
