Student perspectives: AHS neutralizes stereotypes

Stereotypes are ever present anywhere that anyone goes and may appear at any time during a conversation or interaction. At AHS, there is more room for stereotypes to occur because this school is immensely diverse. Many different cultures and personalities matter in the make up of the stereotypes that are formed.

I think the stereotypes, overall, are neutralized here because the students and staff become so accustomed to coexisting with different people. I consider that a huge advantage because it allows for other people to step out of their comfort zones.

I myself have come across several instances where stereotypes were thrown my way and I had to accept the fact that that was the way the other person thought of me as an African-American male at AHS. Stereotypes allow for a person to categorize another person based off very superficial means. It does not allow for someone to really get to know another person. This causes huge problems in a multi-cultural atmosphere like AHS where interaction with people of different ethnicities is a part of daily life.
