Annandale High School has had a golf team for well over 50 years. Annandale’s golf team has been great ever since it was created, having won the State Championship in 1981, and 3 Conference championships over the span of 9 years. This season is no different, we have a strong golf team. On Tuesday September 17, 2024, AHS played against the Edison Eagles at their home course. The weather was not pleasant, nobody was playing their best. The atoms ended up losing to Edison. Annandale has some very talented golfers, but you don’t have to be Tiger Woods to go outside and play golf with your friends. “I like to play golf because it’s fun to go outside with my friends in the nice weather,” said junior Cole Cardwell. “I also enjoy the competitive side of it, you don’t know the score while the game is happening, but you do your best on every hole and hope for the best.” Golf is a great sport because it can either be very competitive, fun to go out and play on a nice day with friends, or both. Unlike Cardwell, some students, like junior Quinn Mongold, enjoy golf because of the calmer side of it. “It’s a more calm and relaxing sport than the other sports that I play,” said Mongold. “The team is very well managed, the coaches set up full rounds which mirror real matches for us to play as practice, so we’re well prepared when the games come around.” Another junior who plays golf here at Annandale, Ricky Nguyen, says “I really enjoy the atmosphere around my teammates and coaches. It is a very supportive and uplifting environment to play in.” This is Ricky’s first year playing golf at Annandale, and he’s already enjoying it more than many other sports. Annandale’s golf team is very junior-led, so if you would like to try out next year, there will be lots of experienced seniors to help you out and show you the ropes. Some of Annandale’s upcoming games are: Wednesday, September 25 at 4:00 PM against Mt Vernon HS at Pinecrest Golf Course, a district tournament being held on Monday, September 30 at 9:00 AM at Greendale Golf Course, and the final match of the 2024-25 golf season, a region tournament being held on Monday, October 7, at the Twin Lakes Golf Course, Clifton, VA. If you can, go support Annandale in their golf matches and cheer on the Atoms!
