For the past five years, the Booster Club has hosted the Winter Olympic Sports Camp for second to eighth graders during these two weeks off. This year will be no different. Two sessions will be hosted—one at Poe Middle School between Dec. 22-23 and the other at AHS between Dec. 29-30—from 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. for the cost of $80 per child, per session.
“The goal is to provide a place for kids to be active and have fun during winter break. With school out for two weeks and many people still working, families will need to find things for their kids to do,” Camp Director, multi-sport coach and AHS English teacher Christopher Bagot said. “We hope to provide that service to help out our community while also building a relationship with future Atoms.”
Students will spend their morning playing a group game before splitting into different colored “countries” by age group and participating in a variety of sports including soccer, gymnastics, wrestling, basketball, volleyball and anything else that is weather appropriate. On the last day, top-point earning students earn medals.
“I think [the kids] enjoy being with their friends and competing. I’ve noticed a lot of the kids know each other and some are pretty close. The close friends can get pretty competitive sometimes, which is always fun to watch,” senior and former camp counselor Austin Graham said.
Varsity gymnastic coach Madison Morella, assistant football and wrestling coach Cesar Lopez and assistant football and baseball coach Daniel Salisbury will be present to help out. Additionally, sophomores Amuari Alvarado and Sahid Kamara will be this year’s counselors.
Not only does the camp provide a fun experience for students, and counselors, who earn service hours, but all of the profit go towards funding the football program—allowing them to pay for team dinners, swag and more.
