Varsity player Saara Farahmand and a number of other athletes have been working to prepare for the season and came out to try out for the softball team this season, whether returning players or new to the sport entirely.
The team has seen a noticeable amount of both growth and interest this year which leads to high hopes across the
squad.
Farahmand has been playing softball for three years now and is heading into her fourth and final season at AHS. She has played infield all three seasons for the team.
“Our biggest hope is to improve upon last season, work together as a group, and earn a spot in districts,” Farahmand said. “There are definitely tough teams to face, but with all the effort we’ve put into practice now and will in the future, I feel confident in our ability to compete strongly.”
The girls have been working relentlessly to make sure this season is one of the best they can make it as well as five seniors playing a large
leadership role in the team. The team has hosted green days at The St. James and some girls, such as junior varsity player Molly Corcoran, have been working with the baseball team, by themselves, or with other teammates to prepare for this spring season.
“I’ve gone to some of the travel team softball clinics, I stayed fit through swim, weight training, and daily exercise,” Corcoran said. “In the
post-swim season I joined the baseball team in some of their preseason practices.”
Junior varsity player Cesia Xocop tried out for softball for the first time at AHS this season, and she is entering the
season with high hopes.
“I feel really excited about the upcoming softball season, I think it’s a new chance to grow, improve and show how much I’ve worked on my skills,” Xocop said. “I’m also a little nervous, but in a good way, it motivates me to do my best.”
The coaches announced the teams on Monday and the team has spent the past week preparing for upcoming scrimmages and games.
The squad has a scrimmage at home on March 9th against Park View, and have upcoming games on the 16th against Manassas Park and on the 18th against Lewis High School.
