Outdoor track has just come into the spotlight again, with the spring season.
To many athletes spring track is a continuation of their winter track season, and maybe even their cross country season, but it stands as many athletes favorite season to run during the school year because of the fun meets, invitationals, and events.
This year the Atoms are approaching new heights as they go for new records as well as trying to get as many athletes as possible to higher levels,
whether its states or regionals.
With the beginning of the season starting, athletes get ready for the season by attending off-season training, improving themselves on the track and working on improving their speed, endurance, and agility for the long
events they will compete in.
Aside from the athletes pushing themselves, coaches also take a major part in improving the team. When it comes to coaches’ opinions on the upcoming season, it’s looking widely positive:
“For the girls and the boys team, we are expecting larger numbers coming out based on the interest we had in the hallway,” Head Distance Track Coach Phil Harris said.
Harris believes that this year will be a strong year for the Atom’s track team and so do the athletes. For this reason, athletes have been working especially hard to prepare for the season.
“In the offseason coming up to spring track I have focused on working out daily, mainly working on my endurance, and stamina training to do better when running this season,” sophomore sprinter Michael Atieh-Hurtado said.
In addition to this, Hurtado has made sure to focus on running around his block to improve his power in running as well as
train himself for longer practices.
