Maintaining a balanced diet is essential to one’s health and even appearance. There are various diets all over the school. When one constantly eats unhealthy, they put their future at risk. Sophomore Lennon Wuhrer disregards her diet and does not necessarily consider what it does in the long run. Senior Brooke Thadeus evenly balances her diet, not overeating but not a health nut. Junior Tehya Moss pays close attention to what she eats, keeping it to the healthy foods. Regardless of one’s  appearance, for the sake of their future health students should pay close attention to what they eat.

Sophomore Lennon Wuhrer is an example of one of the unhealthier people in the school. Although it does not show in her appearance, Wuhrer’s diet is very unbalanced even exercising daily. When it comes to what she consumes, Wuhrer lives in the moment and eats what tastes best.

“I eat taquitos and drink sprite basically everyday when I come home from school. Sometimes while I watch TV or do homework I will snack on a bag of chocolate chips,” Wuhrer said.

Soda of all drinks negatively affects student’s health, New studies have shown that it brings up the risk of a heart attack, and drinking it almost on the daily can be very risky for one’s future.

“I can’t really change my diet, it’s mostly a habit now. My mom has asked me several times to cut down on the starch but it is basically all I eat,” Wuhrer said.

It is important that teens realize their mistakes and improve their diet quickly, because the longer one is in a habit the harder it becomes to get out of the habit. Some teens eat unhealthy simply because it is the most affordable, but most can choose to control what they consume.

On the other hand, Junior Tehya Moss has a healthier diet, carefully watching what she eats.

“Almost everyday after school I like to have a bowl of fruit or yogurt to satisfy my hunger,” Moss said.

Although no single fruit or vegetable provides all of the needed nutrients, they are perfectly healthy to fill a craving and for a snack or a side of a meal. Some stray away from healthy diets because of expense, taste differences or because they are simply too lazy. Little do they know that things like fruit, vegetables and yogurt can satisfy one’s taste buds as well as their health needs.

“My diet doesn’t completely consist of healthy foods, but I eat in small portions so I do not have unhealthy amounts of any bad food,” Moss said.

Another issue throughout the school is the amount students consume. Although something might be partially healthy, too much of one food can severely affect our health. The fact that Moss only eats small portions contributes to her healthy appearance and nature. All students should strive to have a healthy diet by eating normal and even smaller portions. Moss makes sure to stay in shape by dancing daily.

Senior Brooke Thadeus has a relatively normal diet. She balances her foods, making sure not to eat too much of the unhealthy food.

“After school I normally come home and eat chips, cookies, or fruit,” Thadeus said.

Thadeus makes sure to include fruit in her daily snacks to balance with the chips or cookies she may eat. She also makes sure she does not eat too much unhealthy foods, and exercises everyday by running and keeping involved in sports.

“I think my diet is in between. I’ll eat junk food sometimes but I think I do a good job of balancing it out with sandwiches, salads or fruits,” Thadues said.

Her balance between healthy fruit, somewhat unhealthy chips or cookies, and exercising makes a normal and very satisfying diet.

The school could help students maintain better health by advertising healthy foods. The school could replace soda with water or gatorade, and lessen all the junk food in the vending machines. At lunch, the school could require fruit to go with the meals and spend more money on different kinds and varieties of fruit instead of chips and cookies.

Students should not be pressured to have an excessively healthy diet that would require a lot of maintaining, but for the sake of their future health they should improve bad habits. Students should balance their foods by simply making sure to have fruit or veggies daily instead of junk food. Another huge part of staying healthy is staying fit and exercising often. It helps burn the unnecessary calories. Although students tend to look at healthy eating as too much and hard to change, they could start slowly and find that it is not as hard as they perceived. Changing a few bad eating habits could largely impact one’s future health.
