Twitter takes over

With the rise of social media in the form of Myspace, Facebook and Tumblr, teens are finding new ways to communicate and express themselves. With what started as a blog site, Twitter is quickly becoming the most popular social media.

“I made a Twitter account a couple of months ago. Facebook is becoming pretty boring and I thought Twitter looked cool and new. Its fun to play around with it and I like relating to the trending hashtags,”  Junior Obidio Alas said.

The rise in Twitter’s popularity has caused a stream of kids throughout AHS to subscribe to it. A quick and manageable way to relay information, Twitter is the go-to site for The A-Blast and various other sport teams and groups. The Twitter updates are easy to track and the lists of followers are easy to manage.

But not everyone fully enjoys Twitter, “I hate how you are limited to a certain number of characters, but I guess it helps prevent people from going on and on and on,” Junior Sharmin Rahman said.

A major side effect to Twitter, also found commonly throughout the study of other social networks, is addiction. The need to know the who, what, when, where and why instantly is not a new concept but a slightly disturbing one. The recent introduction of twitter has served as a catalyst to the ongoing obsession many people have with the updating, retweeting and following.
