In the spotlight: student volunteers

AHS students are recognized for their constant volunteer work.

Isabel Villarroel,

TRS Counselor

Story continues below advertisement

1. What is your position?

I was a camp counselor volunteer at a Therapeutic Recreation Services summer camp. It’s a summer camp for kids with disabilities.

2. Have you learned anything from it?

Patience, definitely. Also, having different perspectives on things.

3. Would you do it again next summer?

Definitely. I’ll be going back next year and be an actual camp counselor. [This summer] I did everything a normal camp counselor would do, but I also helped with lunches and loading buses.

Harris Fitzgerel,

Fairfax Animal Hospital Volunteer

1. What is your favorite part of your work?

I really enjoy being around all the different animals, because I just love animals and always have.

2. Why did you decide to volunteer?

I have an interest in becoming a vet, so I thought it was a good idea to volunteer before getting into the serious deal.

3. How did you become a volunteer?

We have been going to this office for 16 years because of my family dog. So, the head vet knew our family well and trusted me enough to have the opportunity to volunteer, because they don’t usually take high school students.

Sarah Knenlein,

INOVA Hospital Volunteer

1. How long have you been volunteering?

I have been working at INOVA Alexandira Hospital since September of 2010.

2. Have you learned anything from it?

I have learned a lot about communicating with others while working at the hospital. It requires me to be calm and clear because there are a lot of people that need assistance in one way or another. That means that I have to know what I am doing so that I can help them

3. Why did you decide to volunteer?

Volunteering at the hospital is a great experience because the people you work with are wonderful and it makes you feel that you are helping someone in anyway you can.
