The atoms varsity boys tennis team has reached the end of their season, and with the end of the season the team has time to reflect upon how well they have done this season and how they can improve upon their current skills and abilities.
The team performed decently this season with an overall record of 4-7. The team, instead of being upset about losses, looks at them from a perspective of improvement. They’re always looking to improve upon themselves by seeing what works better for the team if done properly within a match.
Tennis can either be played solo or with a doubles team. Tennis is a highly competitive and agile sport forcing you to constantly be moving with the ball and keeping your mind busy at all times. For new players, it can be a bit overwhelming.
“Communication during doubles is kind of important. We’ve been losing a few games because of that, and I think we need some better team morale when it comes to losses,” sophomore Bao Hua said.
“Keep a clear mind when you’re on the court. When you’re playing singles, it’s just you, and the coach will not talk to you that much during a point, so you need to have a clear mind and a good mindset and don’t let anything get into your head while playing,” Hua said.
This season, there has been an increase in the team’s ability to keep up with the ball.
“This season I felt the team was stronger and more technical in form. The team has improved greatly from last year, and some of the best moments came from senior night because we got to celebrate with our seniors which strengthened our team bond,” sophomore Elliot Rekstad said when asked about how he believed the season went. Many athletes on the team feel a strong connection to one another, showing a clear sign of good chemistry and community between them all. This bond helps the team stand strong between games, win or loss, and allows players to work together better when it comes to doubles gameplay on match days.
Many athletes from the team believe that playing tennis is a great experience and is certainly unforgettable. Due to the majority of the team being sophomores, the team has a strong young core that they will continue to build on. This young core is a good sign of future growth, showing the program’s bright future.
With both the increase in skill from experienced players and the influx of new players coming in, the team is going to get a lot stronger on the technical side of playing, while also improving their skills such as communicating to their doubles partners and encouraging their teammates to keep going when they get tired.
In reflection of this season, the team is going to practice more, ensuring that they work hard and improve upon any losses they may have encountered this season. They will be strengthening their minds and physical playing skills to ensure that the team wins a majority, if not all of their future matches.
