Class of 2012: too disorderly?

Seniors Ahmed Bile, Paul Singh, Sergio Moya and Kardo Omerbell depict the typical rowdy and disruptive senior behavior.

Students and teachers are starting to think this year’s seniors may be a little too loud, excited and even down-right rowdy. The senior class meeting held this Monday was one example of just how disruptive many members of the class of 2012 could be.

It took a long time for teachers to convince the seniors to stop talking and yelling across the auditorium as many speakers waited to present vital information the seniors would need in regards to fundraising and graduation. Some students even found it hard to hear what was being said due to the excess amount of noise coming from all parts of the auditorim. But even before this most recent incident, the seniors have already gotten themselves into tight situations with the administration.

A week before school commenced, on Sept. 2, the class of 2012 planned on painting the chimney with their class logo, as every senior class does every year. What ended up happening that day was some of the seniors engaging in some risky and dangerous behavior on the roof and being kicked off by an administrator. “Half of us were just painting,” senior Anna Dinh, who was present at the time of the incident,  said. “The other half, since there was no administration, were just kind of running everywhere and racing on the rooftops.” One senior was reported to even have a skateboard with him on the roof, which is extremely dangerous.

The seniors were jumping and running on the roof so much “that teachers thought there was another tremor or earthquake,” senior class president Annette Janwatin said. Assistant Principal Aaron Schneider was the administrator who had to kick the students off the roof and cut their painting day short, leaving the chimney unfinished. The students present on the roof on the day of the incident “weren’t allowed to help paint anymore,” Dinh said.

Earlier that week, while painting the AHS train near the senior parking lot, the seniors had a very big paint fight. “It makes school more fun and more interesting,” senior Ahmed Bile said. “We take it upon ourselves [to be rowdy] because somebody has to do it.”

While it may be fun for the rowdy seniors, as long as they don’t get caught, the person held responsible for their actions usually isn’t having a good time. “I know they’re just trying to enjoy their senior year as superior seniors,” Janwatin said. “But all the responsibility comes to me.”

Assistant principal Donna Higgins is the senior class administrator, and the actions of the senior class also reflect on her. “The incident on the roof was very disappointing,” she said. “We actually hold high standards for our seniors and expect them to be role models for all the others coming up.”

In past years, the administration hasn’t had a huge problem with seniors being too disruptive. This year, there are some opposing views amongst the seniors on how best to show their seniority and dominate the school. “We just like being loud in the hallways and making people move out of the way since we’re seniors,” senior Paul Singh said. “I feel the underclassmen are kind of scared already.”

Janwatin feels the senior class can bring it down a notch, “Senior stampedes in past years were pretty hectic and they trashed the whole school,” she said. “So we should try not to do that this year but still have fun with the stampede.”

As long as the seniors do not cross the line with any of the SR&R guidelines and limitations, they should be okay with the administration. However if they do break any of those rules, “We have in the past not allowed seniors to walk on graduation night and that’s our last resort,” Higgins said.
