For many cosmetic consumers, the “tested on animals” label found on numerous name brand products sends pictures of helpless animals through their heads. This label acts as the deciding factor in many buyers’ decisions. Eco-friendly makeup is a growing trend in the beauty industry and has become important to many people when buying cosmetic products.

“I guess as a makeup user I do not like to use products from brands that test on animals,” junior Skye Lindberg said.  “I don’t believe it’s right for an animal to be harmed for me to have some fun with makeup. I’d rather use products from more organic brands.”

Unlike many other countries, the United States has not made it illegal for companies to test their products on animals.  There are many other ways products can be tested for safety without harming animals, though. The animal testing issue has been a controversial topic in the United States for many years.

“It is not humane for the cosmetic industry to test on these animals; many animals die from these testings and are affected long term.” Junior Alexandra Williams said.

For the animal lovers, there are various animal-friendly products available for use. Mary Kay is a very prominent company that is against animal testing. They use other alternatives to ensure the safety of their cosmetic products.

Along with being animal friendly, many big-name companies are becoming environmentally friendly. Products that are eco-friendly are typically made from natural substances such as plants and minerals, are  biodegradable and come in recyclable packaging.

Due to the growing issue of maintaining a healthy environment, many green cosmetic companies have emerged in the industry. Companies including Aveeno have made the green transition.  Aveeno products all come in recyclable packaging and they use solar power to create their products.

“I sometimes check to see if my make up is recyclable or green, but if the cosmetic I really like isn’t eco-friendly, I use it anyway,” sophomore Kunnica Kou said.

EcoTools is an example of a solely green company that uses recycled materials to make their cosmetic brushes and bath tools. They also donate a percentage of their profits to earth and wildlife non-profit organizations and never test on animals.

Despite all of the earth friendly companies, many consumers still don’t take out the time to avoid harmful products. This only adds to the worldwide ignorance that eco-friendly companies are working to prevent.

“I’ve never taken the time to check if the products I use harm animals or the environment,” Sophomore Giacomo Modica said.

There are several simple measures people can take to ensure that the products they are using are both animal and environmentally friendly. Most companies will mention whether they test on animals or help the environment on their website’s page. The simplest step of all is to look for the “recycled” symbol or the “not tested on animals” label on all products being bought. Starting small and transitioning slowly to  more eco-friendly products will help students ease into this new earth-conscious trend. People’s normal habits in buying makeup do not need to change, they just need to keep in mind that their purchases, no matter how big or small, will affect the environment.
