Royal wedding fever sweeps AHS

With approximately 1900 people invited and 20 million pounds spent, 2 billion viewers tuned in from home all over the world. Each of these numbers is used to describe the Royal Wedding of Prince William and Kate Middleton, which was held in London at Westminster Abbey early this morning.

Some AHS students woke up early to catch the wedding at around 6 a.m. because of the 5 hour time difference.

“I got up at 5:45 a.m. and I ate breakfast while I watched it. I thought the Royal Wedding was nice and Kate’s dress was really classy and pretty,” senior AshbyRose Nelson said. “I was half an hour late to school because I wanted to stay and watch until Kate got to Buckingham Palace.”

The Royal Wedding was the most anticipated royal wedding since Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding, the parents of Prince William. There were many similarities between the two events, but this wedding had the bigger numbers of viewers. Approximately 750 million people watched Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding. In opposition, Prince Charles and Lady Diana’s wedding cost more at about 30 million pounds. Their son and his bride wanted to make an effort to reduce costs.

The wedding day in England was a national holiday, which caused many people to line up on the streets and watch the wedding on big screens that were set outside Hyde Park in London.  Although some AHS students were not as excited about the wedding as others, some students thought it should have been an American holiday as well. “We should have gotten the day off like the British kids,” sophomore Clark Girardin said.

Some students thought it was blown out of proportion. “I think it is getting too much publicity for a wedding,” freshman Gaby Camilli said. Others thought it was broadcasted too early. “I think it started too early for anyone to watch the whole thing. Plus, it is on a school day,” sophomore Christian Wong said.

Whether AHS students watched the Royal Wedding or not, everyone was talking about it throughout the day. It is a day that will live on in history because now this AHS generation can say that they lived through the wedding of Kate Middleton Prince William.
