Scandals and controversies

Junior Emily Farsani is surfing the web when she sees yet another celebrity marriage breakup and keeps browsing, as it seems to be an everyday occurrence. Recently, all we hear in the news lately is of celebrity breakups and infidelities.

Celebrity scandals and infidelities seem to haunt celebrities long after the scandal originates. There seems to always new twists and turns months after the allegations. The infamous Tiger Woods scandal, which occurred months ago, is just now beginning to settle down.  However, fans and celebrity-watchers did not have to wait long for a new scandal to spring up.

“I consistently read about celebrities being cheated on and so when I read about another cheating I am not surprised,” said junior Gabby Hankinson.

Sandra Bullock had made it to the top, winning the prestigious Oscar award as best actress for her role in The Blind Side.  She had been where everybody in Hollywood strives to be. As she was beginning to enjoy her high honor and fame, tragedy struck in her personal life.

The news broke that America’s sweetheart and idol had been cheated on by her husband of five years, Jesse James.  Even though Bullock and James had established a family with James’ biological daughter, Sunny, it did not stop James from having secret affairs with several mistresses for the past couple of months.  Then again, it did not stop Woods’ from having his secret affairs with women even though he had children as well. And, just like the Woods case, there have been many allegations of James’ infidelity, with numerous mistresses turning themselves in.

“I think overall cheating is unacceptable and in no way is it justified. I know she is a strong woman and if a man does that he was probably not even worth it from the start. I know she’ll get passed it,” junior Andrea Villarroel said about her feelings about James’ cheating.

Other students seem to be especially upset about the situation as well. “When I found out that Jesse James cheated on Sandra Bullock soon after she won an Oscar, I wanted to go up to him and give him a big punch in the face,” said junior Emily Farsani. “How could he do that to his family?”

It is not just girls who are disappointed about this, guys also show a great interest.“I do not understand why men with hot wives cheat with trashy women.” said sophomore Jason Antezana.

Bullock’s betrayal affects many students. She is seen as such a great role model and female figure for teens across the nation.

“When I think of Sandra Bullock I think of a funny and respectable woman who everyone loves. After I heard about what happened to her I was crushed because she did not deserve it,” said junior Tatiana Daza. Bullock and Woods are not the only celebrities whose private, relationship lives have been heavily publicized by the media. Who could forget the Jon and Kate divorce battle?

A-list stars had to move out the way when Jon and Kate had taken over our TV screens. What made the case so heavily publicized were the eight children they shared, along with a reality TV show.

“I had watched Jon and Kate Plus 8 since the children were babies. I knew the show was going to end because the chemistry between Jon and Kate faded throughout the seasons, but when it actually ended it really sucked,” said Daza.

Jon and Kate’s divorce was not the first battle that turned ugly, as most tend to in celebrity cases because of the heavy press they receive. As soon as word gets out magazines and celebrity sites feed off about anything they can, most of the time exaggerating the truth.

According to Divorcerate.org, The Americans for Divorce Reform approximates that “Probably, 40 or possibly even 50 percent of marriages will end in divorce if current trends continue. However, that is only a projection and a prediction.”

All the celebrity scandals that have been recently surfacing into the public eye makes one wonder if this happens on a regular basis. “I think it just makes us look at celebrities in a more cliché way,” says sophomore Adeeba Rasoli about her thoughts on the way celebrity cheaters have influenced students.

Perhaps this happens all the time but no one knows because the people who are cheating have yet to be caught. According to Truth About Deception, “It is estimated that roughly 30 to 60 percent of all married individuals (in the United States) will engage in infidelity at some point during their marriage.” And “In many cases, infidelity never gets discovered.” The more the public is aware of these types of circumstances that occur, the more aware couples would be to one another. Cheaters will have to think twice before going behind their partners back.
