Netflix reportedly is keeping “Friends”, but keeping it will come at a steep price.

When fans found out that the old series, “Friends”, is leaving Netflix in the new year, they were outraged. There were a series of petitions made by fans which got thousands of signatures. As a result, Netflix paid 100 million dollars to stream “Friends” in the U.S. throughout 2019.

“The Holiday Armadillo has granted your wish: “Friends” will still be there for you in the US throughout 2019.” Netflix announced that “Friends” is staying on through 2019 on Twitter on Dec. 3.

Hulu was also interested in the show. Hulu’s interest in the show ended up pushing the price up well beyond the $30 million a year Netflix was already paying for it. But the bigger issue is not how much they’re going to pay to keep the show in the next year, but how much they’re going to pay in the following years. WarnerMedia will most likely include “Friends” in its service, but it has not decided whether they want exclusive rights to the show or whether they’re willing to share it.

So this is what WarnerMedia and Netflix has ended up with: Netflix could either pay $75 million a year to WarnerMedia, only if they let Netflix stream the show at a discount of about 25 percent. Or WarnerMedia will take “Friends” from Netflix altogether and keep the show as an exclusive.

The real question is whether the amount being paid for the show to keep streaming is really worth it. Everyone had different opinions.

“I think that it’s a waste of money.” sophomore Israa Kay said. “They should save the money for new movies and shows, “Friends” is very overrated and it is definitely not worth $100 million.”

While some believe that the show is not worth it, most believe that it is worth every penny. When speculation broke that “Friends” would be leaving Netflix people took to social media to vent their frustration.

“I think that is it worth it because “Friends” is one of the best shows on Netflix.” sophomore Kalkedan Gashaw said. “It is such a classic and it deserves the praise it gets, Netflix made the right decision.”

For now, fans are just relieved that “Friends” will be there for them throughout the next year.
