A new club at AHS

Young ChangeMakers is a new club that is having its first meeting after school on Wednesday, October 2nd, 2013. Young ChangeMakers, a new club introduced to AHS will hold its first meeting after school on Wednesday, October 2, 2013. The Young Change Makers club is for students who want an experience with creating their own business ventures that will help them enter the field of entrepreneurship.

Young ChangeMakers is correlated with a non-profit organization called Learn Serve International. Learn Serve International is based in D.C. and brings together high school students from the D.C. metropolitan area who are united by a common drive to make the world a better place. During the program, students learn how to start up their own non-profit venture and organizations through a year-long course.

For his venture, current Georgetown University student and LearnServe alum, Jake Scorreles, wanted to give high schools an opportunity to be able to participate and share their ideas, equal to what LearnServe does for a select few. His Learn Serve project consisted of starting a Young ChangeMakers, a club that was successfully implemented in Thomas Jefferson High School and because of its success, in other schools in D.C., Maryland and Virginia area.Students will follow a curriculum that will focus on budgeting, planning and advertising.

This year, as a new addition, the club will be lead by various college students in correlation with high school former LearnServe alums.

“Lucky for us,” senior Lily Montes de Oca said, “Jake is our team leader, so he’ll come and lead the meetings for Annandale!”

Lily Montes de Oca is a Learn Serve International alumnus and is excited for the first meeting. She has been part of the non-profit organization since sophomore year, and is helping initiate the club into Annandale. “LearnServe was such an amazing experience that taught me so much about the world we’re living in today and the overwhelming potential we have as a generation,” Montes de Oca said. “I just wanted that same experience to be accessible to everyone.”

The meetings will be held every other Wednesday after school in the IMF lab with Tech Specialist Jennifer Cory.
