From strangers to current household names, One Direction has gone from being a band of British heartthrobs to worldwide sensations in only a matter of months. This British boy band consists of Zayn Malik, Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson and Ireland native Niall Horan.
The group formed after initially auditioning as single musicians on the 2012 U.K. X-Factor TV show. They were put together as a group by their coach, Simon Cowell, who felt they’d be stronger together. And he was right. The boys unfortunately didn’t win the show and ended up placing third, but were then signed by Cowell to Syco Records.
Their career may have started in the U.K, but One Direction quickly becoming global following the release of their first single “What Makes You Beautiful.” The song quickly beat sales for The Beatles first U.S. release, “I Want to Hold Your Hand,” in terms of sales. And that says a lot.
“What Makes You Beautiful” was recently named Best British Single at the 2012 Brit Awards.
One Direction has recently signed to Colombia Records with the release of their album Up All Night. The album dropped in the U.S. on March 13. It consists of 13 fantastic songs.
The album starts off with “What Makes You Beautiful,” a beautifully composed song that has a fun upbeat tune and is insanely catchy. The line “You don’t know you’re beautiful, that’s what makes you beautiful” has teenage fan girls screaming in obsession. The beginning of the song sounds like “Summer Nights” from the musical Grease. But they give it their own twist and it sounds amazing.
“Gotta Be You” is a slow and extremely cheesy love song. Payne starts the song with his deep intriguing voice, but as the song goes on the music picks up and all the five boys sing the chorus and hit the high notes in perfect harmony.
“One Thing,” has a nice cheery tune that you could listen to all day. Listening to this song makes you want to jump up and sing along too.
“More Than This” and “Moments” happen to be two of my favorite songs on the album. They are both slow songs that have such beautifully written lyrics. The guitar playing in the background of “Moments” adds a unique style to this song.
“More Than This” is just amazing. It is really interesting to hear all five of the boys sing in harmony throughout the chorus.
“Up All Night,” is the title song which is excellent and cheery. It has catchy lyrics and peppy music. It’s surely one of those songs that’ll keep your feet tapping. It really does make you want to “stay up all night.”
These are just some of the catchy songs in Up All Night, though the rest of the songs are all written brilliantly and the music fits perfectly.
They could have done a little better by writing original lyrics and hooks, but who cares? They’re a boy band. Nonetheless, Up All Night is going to sell out in stores all over the U.S. and the world, guarenteed.
