Wizards return is much anticipated

The 2013-14 NBA season is starting up soon with a Tuesday night matchup pitting the defending champs, the Miami Heat against the Chicago Bulls. For the hometown team, the Washington Wizards, this year is about finally showing some significant progress for the previous 5 years of building up the team. The Wizards have have suffered 5 consecutive losing seasons after making the playoffs 4 years in a row before that. Significant progress for this team would have to be making the playoffs, many within the organization have made statements to show the urgency to finally get out of the hole the organization has been in for several years.

“I’m tired of losing” said Wizards majority owner Ted Leonsis. “It’s not a lot of fun coming to games knowing this is going to be a tough night”.

Leonsis is entering his 4th year as majority owner and he expects the team to step it up. This year’s Wizards squad is highlighted by lightning quick 4th year point guard John Wall, sharpshooting 2nd year shooting guard Bradley Beal, and veteran power forward Nene Hilario. Over the offseason the Wizards added local sensation Otto Porter from Georgetown and last week they made a big trade for Phoenix Suns center Marcin Gortat.
“A healthy John Wall with a refined roster will make them a playoff contender” said senior Ibrahim Ahmed.

Ahmed’s analysis is a common one amongst Wizards fans and some fans have even higher hopes this year.

“Championship or bust” said senior Grant Gittins.

The Wizards know that this is a make it or break it year for their current nucleus, the players feel the pressure. and the fan base has suffered enough. At Annandale there are already a very few Wizards fans due to the lack of success for the past 5 years and when you take a look around Annandale you rarely ever see someone in Wizards gear, rather you see people who shifted their allegiance or “bandwagoned” to much more successful teams such as the Heat, the Bulls, and the Los Angeles Lakers.

“Bandwagons in my opinion are people who don’t even understand the fundamentals of the game, they can’t even name 5 players on the team” senior Anthony Tsai said.

All 3 of those teams have had immense levels of success the previous 5 years and many people don’t have the patience to wait for a winner, they want a winner now. D.C. sports need someone to save them from the inconsistent Redskins, the regressing Capitals, and the underwhelming Nationals.
