drivers license captivates with vocals and surrounding drama

“drivers license” by Olivia Rodrigo is said to be an anthem for hopeless romantics. The song has sold over 16,000 copies and been streamed 21 million times in the U.S. alone in its first three days.

The song has had a big influence on teenagers all over the country. “drivers license” is currently number one on the U.S. daily charts for both Apple Music and Spotify.

The song has also gone viral on the social media app, TikTok. Teens have been singing, dancing and making memes to the song.

In the song, Rodrigo talks about how she got her driver’s license last week and drives around town, reminiscing about her past relationship. The music video highlights that line as she drives down a dark long road singing her song.

So, why is the song getting so much recognition so quickly? Well, other than the brilliant lyrics and beautiful melody, there is drama behind the song that many teens can relate to.

Rodrigo has been rumored to have dated her co-star, Joshua Bassett, on the High School Musical series. Rodrigo and Bassett’s characters are the love interests, but most fans believe that the chemistry that goes on on camera also goes on off camera.

“The drama surrounding it is a bit excessive, but I do feel bad for the artist,” sophomore Litzy Rivas said. “I do think that drama is true. By listening to the song, you can hear the pain in her voice.”

Neither has confirmed the relationship, but students still have their suspicions.

“I feel like Olivia and Josh would be a better couple together, but if Josh likes Sabrina then I don’t think people should be bashing her for it,” sophomore Sophia Turay said. “If Joshua and Sabrina are happy, then people should just let them be.”

The song has been a huge hit for Rodrigo, allowing her to gain recognition and support from artists all over. After she posted on Instagram about how her song is under two of Taylor Swift’s songs on the top charts, Swift then commented, saying “I say that’s my baby and I’m really proud.”

This isn’t the first time one of Rodrigo’s songs has gone viral. Back in November of 2019, she sang “All I Want” in episode four of High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. The song was globally streamed and was especially widely known on TikTok.

“I don’t really listen to Olivia Rodrigo’s music that often but when she makes a hit song I tend to vibe with them,” junior Tsion Abate said. “I think I’m going to start to listen to more music of hers.”

At the age of seventeen, Rodrigo has millions interested in her music and her life. It’s clear that she isn’t going anywhere anytime soon.

“I really like the song. It’s catchy. The rumors about it are really interesting,” junior Iman Hamdela said. “I honestly think the rumors might be a reason why I like the song so much.”
