Are school drills helpful in real situations?

Most of the students in Annandale High School have been doing drills since elementary school, but now some students are questioning whether or not the drills that schools implement are useful.

The fire drill is the most common drill that students do throughout their school years, it is when students line up in a single file line and have to go slowly through the school and out the parking lot while being guided by their teachers. It seems that in a real situation or most real situations involving a building burning, victims are mostly the ones to run away as fast as possible rather than standing in a single file line.

Similar situations happen when doing tornado drills or lockdown drills. The U.S. has had a history of school shootings and specifically the shooting in Virginia Tech in 2007. It raises the question of whether schools need to change their training to avoid these disasters.
